In Febuary I contacted discover to discuss my wifes closed account. I wanted to be view the account online and lower the intrest rate as consumer counsling service do. The lady on the phone openly discuss the account with me. She told me it was past due and if I brought the account current then I could get what I asked for. A lower intrest rate and account access online. She told me I would have to wait 2-3 days for it to post to the account. I then made a 100.00 payment to them. The payment to bring the account current was only around 39.00. Wehn I called back on Monday I was told that they were not authorized to talk to me about the account and they would not honor the deal that they made. My wife then sent them letters including certified letters giving them permission to discuss the account with me. These letters have been ignored and some certified letters have been lost. She also has informed them many times by phone to discuss the account with me. They have also added this report to my credit report which is excelent and no late payments. They have done this even though they are not authorized to discuss this account with me. Mine and my wife's attorny has also contacted them and they still refused to allow me to discuss issues with this account and lower the intrest rate. On are around May 12, 2006. A Mark --- was contacted at the request of my attorney. He stated to me that I would have no problem any more and would be able to discuss all issues related to this account, but could not change any information. He then gave me two numbers. The first was to set the account up online and the next was to contact a department and get a lowere intrest rate. On May 15,2006 I contacted discover. I was told again that I they could not discuss the account with me. That the intrest rate could not be lowered also. I was able to get the account set up online. I got lucky on that one. They have violated the fair dedbt pratice act. They did this by using deceptive means to collect a debt. T hey have lost letters including certified ones. They refused request by my attorney to discuss this account with me. They have lied and said that it had been fixed to speak to me and they refuse to lower the intrest rate even though I was sent to a number to resolve this problem. I urge all people to not open and close any account with discover card. Also I urge you to call Mark --- at ---- and flood the phone lines urging them to resolve this matter in a proffesional and timely manner. Mark, It sounds as if the account you are referring to was initially handled by Discover's Collections department, they are authorized to speak with third parties to bring accounts out of deliquency, basically the third party can only make payments. If the $39.00 payment you made brought the account up to day, when you called back your call would automatically be routed to customer service instead of collections. Customer Service does not speak with third parties, regardless of the letters you have sent it, it's a decision within the corporate policy so it's not something your wife can change by sending a letter. Your wife herself needs to call customer service and handle her account. In regards to the account showing on your credit report... credit card companies have no way to make an account show on a third parties credit bureau, this is handled at the bureau level. Discover Card simply sends your wifes credit file over once a month with her information only and the bureau matches up similar accounts from the same address. If the account is showing on the report you need to contact Discover Card and let them know it is showing incorrectly and would like to have it removed they will send a request to the bureau or you can contact the bureau it is reporting on directly.
