I had a typical service done ( ), and they tell me it'll be 30 minutes. I come back 30 minutes later, they tell me I "need" to have my brake fluid and power steering fluid flushed and replaced, which will be something like $7.99 and 15.99. I added them up quickly in my head and thought, "well, adding those to the service will total roughly $55 or so--not too bad." I told them to go ahead and do it, but not before asking them why I "need" to have them replaced.

Their answer was that they were "dirty." I have my car serviced regularly according to the recommended time frame/mileage--give or take some, and I rarely drive that car--maybe once a week at most, so there's no reason why my brake and power steering fluid would be so dirty that they need to be flushed and replaced. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt (and also because it didn't seem like they would cost much to do).

They said it'll take another 20 minutes, so I came back 20 minutes later. That's when they hit me with the $100 extra for labor! $50 for each of the flushing/ replacement. I was very upset, because they said nothing about it, and even the numbers she had shown me on the exact spot she jotted down the cost on the same page has been "modified" with an extra digit.

Report this situation to the B.A.R. go to smogcheck.ca.gov for the consumer affairs department and fill out a report. It only takes a few minutes but if they really changed the prices afterwards then you should report it!

California has pretty much the strictest laws regarding automotive repair, and they will investigate it. I mean you may not get your money back, but maybe you will, and either way the shop should be reported if they are doing things like that.

I am assuming you do not have your original estimate- before they "modified" the numbers. But if you don't have a copy that means the estimate was oral, not written. Therefore it is basically your word against thiers, and there is a good chance they didn't properly document your authorization. Go to the BAR site and look for yourself to see what the rules are regulating auto repair. See if they violated any of those rules and make out your report. And you will know now and in the future what your rights are!

I mean I don't want anyone making false reports against auto shops, but I go through a lot of work daily making sure that I get all the customer authorizations, that I document them correctly, and that the customer fully understands the cost involved and what they get in return. That is my job and it's a lot of work making sure I am compliant with all the laws, that way if I ever had a report against me, I would have the documents to back my side up. So while most problems are miscommunications, if they really did something to rip you off like you say then they should be reported. All they do is make it harder for everyone else!
